Creativity 2! Video Making!

When 2 weeks with Mr Harle were done we had to go to Mr Burringe - my art teacher :)
What we had to do was to create a cartoon like they used to do before the animation technology got so developed! With drawings, plasticine or moving cards! I had my idea straight away - Stick man is the easiest and as it was before Xmas i felt in the mood to do something with the Christmas tree!
The first part of our CAS Afternoon i spent on planning my animation. First idea that came to my mind was to draw the tree and the man on the black card paper with white chalk and after erase the chalk and make my animation by drawing and erasing. As i started with the tree, which I'm very glad i did, i realised that you can't erase chalk and the marks stays, therefore i needed to invent a way our - and so i did! Take another black card paper and cut out the man! 1 obstacle - Passed! And so i continued with drawing my dream Christmas Tree and to make it more colourful i decided to make the decorating balls out of colourful plasticine! The next step was to make my stick man alive, and so i started! The Program we were working with was called iStop Motion, when you take a picture and to make up a 1 single second you needed to take 6 pictures. which means that the movements had to be tiny and nearby so they don't seem broken but smooth and realistic. So there i was ready to start my little Christmas Cartoon!

When i started my carton and took around 3 seconds, i decided to view how it was going. And i noticed that the feet of my man didn't seem to be actually walking, as they were wide open there wasn't the middle part and the bending parts so i needed to change my man and the way out of this situation was to cut off the feet and move them by myself and leave the trunk and head together! 2nd obstacle - Passed!

After the technical problems have been solved, i was finally ready!
the idea was to be preparing for Christmas and my hero was getting his christmas tree ready, but one ball was yet missing so this was the first part of the animation! Which took me the rest of the lesson of our first week... By the end, when cleaning up, i realised that i need to remember somehow the order of the decoration balls on my christmas tree, so under each ball i wrote: B - for blue, O - for orange and Y - for yellow! so in the beginning of the next lesson I´d put them on the right places and it wouldn't be visible in the Animation!:)

Week two!

On the second week week, i planned to continue and as it was after christmas i thought it would be nice to make my stickman go up the ladder i prepared the first week and collect all the balls! and therefore I've prepared some shapes. Half way throughout i didn't very like the movements and the way h was collecting so I decided to delete that part already and stick to the Pre-Party, so before the Xmas actually finished!
To make this more personal, i decided to change Christmas to New Years, as being Russian and orthodox means not celebrating Christmas but the actual New Years! So i made my man walk to the middle and move his hands up and down while ´Happy New Year´ phrase made on cut out letters and appear one after one! In this part I faced 2 problems! First was obviously the letters and that camera wasn't mirrored so all letters were backwards. After few minutes thinking and looking at my chalk and paper i realised: I could leave an imprint on the other piece of paper and then draw the letters backwards, cut them out and started! I also had to remember that the words now had to start on the right and go to the left and not as usual from left to right! 2 writing problems - Solved!
As the phrase problem was solved, and one by one letters were making up the phrase, i decided to add some colour in and as if the celebration was loading i started colouring in the presents with red chalk and the tree with green chalk and also added some multi coloured fireworks! But as i wanted them to pop up and out i knew i couldn't erase them so i cut out circles, placed them and drew the appearing and loading fireworks! I also decided to add some movement to my tree and after each letter i was changing the order of the decoration balls, which kept on running away from the place...
As my animation was finally done: colourful and fully developed i couldn't wait to watch from the beginning to the end! By the end, i realised the big details that I've missed out which made my animation not as good as i imagined it would be! as 1 second required 6 photos it hit me, that the phrase was moving too fast to see the beauty of slow and exciting loading of the celebration. At first i thought i was okay, as i could take away the letters and take pictures of the empty background but the tree was already fully coloured in which would reveal the secret and it wouldn't be as pretty... 1 more challenge...It didnt take me that long to remember my best friend - iMovie, the program i use a lot, as making videos with photos or videos from travels and events is one of my biggest hobbies! In that program you can choose a part you want to slow down and that was what i decided to do! to make it less silent i decided to add some melody. Only melody, because i thought if i added a song with lyrics it would be too districting and would take away the magic and attention from my stick man! Few minutes before the bell was gone, my animation was finally done, and i was thrilled to share my masterpiece with everyone in my group! I was very proud i managed to do so much, solve so many problems and overcome so many obstacles and end up with such a beautiful, interesting and complex animation!

P.S. See all the pieces that I've used:
